Torbay MP Adrian Sanders is supporting the Electoral Commission in its aim to ensure everyone eligible to vote has the chance to have their say at the forthcoming General Election.
Current estimates show that around 5,000 people in Torbay who are eligible to vote may not be registered, rendering them incapable of voting in the next election, which must take place by June.
The rate of non-registration increases considerably for those aged 18-24 and those in rented accommodation. In particular many who have moved home in the past 6 months are at risk of not being included in the electoral register.
Anyone eligible to vote can register up to 11 working days before the election by contacting Torbay Council on 01803 207171.
Adrian said, “Whichever way you want to vote at the next election, it is essential for everyone over the age of 18 to at least have the opportunity to have their say in how their local area is represented. Failing to be registered prevents hundreds of thousands of people nationwide getting involved.”
“When I was first elected to represent my home town just 12 votes separated me from the Conservative Candidate, proving that every vote counts in Torbay.”
