Adrian Sanders has joined a campaign in Parliament recognising the crucial role local newspapers play in forging and maintaining a vibrant sense of community among residents.
MPs congratulated local papers for the invaluable services they provide, from reliable news coverage to holding representatives accountable, qualities which characterise all strong democracies.
The MPs also recognise that given these trying economic times, local newspapers are in great need of our support in order to continue to deliver these much needed and appreciated services.
Adrian commented: “Local newspapers provide their readers with a tangible, familiar link to their communities. The closeness of this link encourages residents to develop an attitude of trust that is instrumental to reputable journalism.”
“Local newspapers have the time to make local news their number one priority, a decision their national counterparts can seldom afford to make. They also have a strong incentive to give their readers (who may be their neighbour) quality news. In a small community, writer and reader may be separated by a few streets, whereas larger papers have a readership that can span hundreds of miles.”
